On October 22 2024, I sent this message to neighbors in ANC3C07 that had been identified lead water service lines:
Dear Neighbor,
I hope this message finds you well. I’m reaching out to alert you that DC Water has determined that your water service line may be made of lead pipe. Removing lead service lines is a priority for DC Water and other agencies to eliminate a potential source of lead exposure, which poses serious health risks, especially for children and pregnant women.
To confirm that your water service line is made of lead, visit DC Water’s Lead Map and enter your address to see the status of your water service line. This map indicates your house has verified or suspected lead water service lines.
Assistance Available. There is assistance available to replace lead service lines.
- DC Water’s Lead Pipe Replacement Program: DC Water offers replacement options, including partial or full lead service line replacement. The situation is complicated because lead service lines are partially the responsibility of DC Water and partially property owners. DC Water will replace the water service lines at no cost to property owners in many cases. You can learn more about the program here. DC Water offers free lead testing here.
- DC Department of Energy & Environment (DOEE) Lead Programs: The DOEE offers information and some resources on lead. DOEE is also offering 100% discount for replacement of lead service pipes on private property using funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Our Advisory Neighborhood Commission recently hosted a representative from DC Water to provide more information on their lead water service effort. You can see the briefing here (about minute 30). As a neighbor and ANC Commissioner, I wanted to ensure you have every available resource to address this issue.
